The Waterford Community Coalition is a prevention coalition and we understand that prevention includes many different elements.
The WCC helps promote health and well-being with evidence-based prevention and early-intervention strategies which reduce both the incidence of mental health and substance use conditions.
Strengthening an individual’s mental health and promoting resilience to handling life’s stressors not only reduces the risk of mental and substance use conditions but contributes to improved general health, well-being, productivity, and a healthier community. We work with all sectors of our community because we know that we can accomplish amazing things when we all come together.
Narcan Training, in partnership with the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities, offers a complimentary class aimed at equipping individuals with the necessary skills to administer Narcan in the event of an opioid overdose emergency. This training covers the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose, current trends, essential actions to take, proper administration of Narcan nasal spray, available resources, and how to obtain a refill.
Participants will receive guidance on Medication Management and Safety, including tips on how to safely dispose of unused or unwanted prescriptions using Deterra Bags, securing medications with our complimentary lock boxes, and education on prescription safety, including the use of prescription lock boxes. This comprehensive training not only provides life-saving skills but also empowers individuals to take proactive steps in managing medications and ensuring the safety of themselves and their loved ones.
Mock Teen Bedroom is an interactive teen bedroom which provides parents, guardians, educators, and other caregivers increased awareness about trends in youth substance use and aid in how to spot red flags with possible drug use among youth and current trends parents may not be familiar with keeping them educated and aware
This free 6-week after-school program is designed to help middle school girls develop confidence and skills to be their best self. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics to promote protective factors. We use tools for mental, behavioral, and social health in a fun, safe, non-judgmental, hands-on learning environment.
Alcohol Awareness Education is essential for both parents and youth to comprehend the detrimental impact of alcohol on the brain. Our program provides valuable information, conversation starters, and practical tools such as our Tamper Proof Tabs for Parents Empowering. These resources are designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions regarding alcohol consumption
Vape 101 Presentations to learn more about vaping, current trends, how vaping effects our bodies, mainly youth’s developing brain. We can include our Mock Teen Bedroom
Partnering with the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities, Oakland County Health Department, the State of Michigan, SAMHSA and Waterford Law Enforcement, once a year we visit multiple retailers in Waterford that sell tobacco, vapors, and other nicotine products to provided educational materials and tools about the importance of not selling these products to minors and help the retailers stay in compliance with tobacco regulations in accordance with the 1996 Synar Amendment, which was created in response to the growing evidence of the health risks associated with youth tobacco use. Later, underage and undercover youth decoys entered the stores and attempted to purchase these products to ensure that tobacco products are not sold to underage youth
We offer a variety of programs aimed at educating both youth and adults on stress management. Participants will learn about the effects of stress on the brain and body, as well as effective coping strategies to build resilience and navigate daily challenges.
The WCC Coping Tool Box is an invaluable resource that equips individuals with the necessary tools to effectively manage their emotions in a healthy manner. This tangible container is stocked with items designed to promote emotional regulation and expression. It offers a hands-on approach that empowers individuals to self-soothe and self-regulate during moments of emotional distress.
A Waterford Community Coalition staff will work alongside you to help to identify specific need(s). Our knowledgeable staff will then link you to the appropriate resources that our community has to offer. It is our goal that you will remain thriving within the community
The WCC is dedicated to improving the understanding of mental and physical health disparities that start with Adverse Childhood Experiences, ACEs for short. We hold several presentations educating the community to better understand what ACEs are and how they can impact one’s life, and what can be done about it. For example, you may want to describe a team member's experience, what makes a product special, or a unique service that you offer.
Since youth are consumed with technology parents need to understand the effects all this media has on the brain development and harmful effects. Several studies have uncovered connections between social media and mental health problems in teens so we educate the community on what we currently know about how media affects youth brain development which can help parents and policymakers understand the potential benefits and harms of technology use for teens.

Using the evidence based Parents as Teachers, Strengthening Parents, and Breakthrough Parenting curriculum, the goal for this class is based on engaging families, programs, and communities by incorporating the protective factors It covers a broad range of topics, parenting styles, including building emotional intelligence, self-care, coping with everyday stress, what parenting skills are, love & limits, child development, ACE's, intellectual development, communicating with your kids, engaging with your kids, instilling self-esteem, teaching values, meeting their needs, being a good role model, transitioning from live-in recovery programs into the real world, youth transitioning out of foster care, safe talk, and more. This can be through a program, a series of classes, or a one-time only overview.
This program uses an educational and support group model with children who have experienced some sort of change in their life causing them to be stressed. Although the changes may be different for each group member, the intent of the CIC Program is that all participants in the group will be able to share safely their experience and learn to develop life skills to help them cope with their emotions, anger and learn conflict resolution.
